Application Guidelines

All proposals must be prepared employing the following guidelines.

  • Complete the Applicant's Profile form
  • Title of the proposal.
  • Principal Investigator: Your name, department, telephone number, fax number, mailing address, and e-mail address on the cover page of the proposal.
  • Project Summary: Provide a brief abstract of your proposal. This summary should be approximately 250 words in length. The abstract and the title of the proposal will be your page 1.
  • Project Description: This represents the most critical part of your proposal. It should be 6-10 pages in length, and use single-spaced format for the text (use 12 point font to ensure easy readability). The Project Description should include the following:

    1. Introduction and Problem Statement: Provide and overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the research problem of interest in your study. In addition, specify what your research proposal will do to further advance our knowledge in the area of development policy in regard to growth and access.

    2. Objectives: Identify the specific research objectives to be pursued in your project.

    3. Research Methods: Describe the research methodology to be undertaken for each objective. If sampling is being proposed, provide a strong rationale as to the relevance of site(s) selected for your research investigation. If an existing data set is being utilized, discuss the quality and relevance of this data resource in addressing the subject of your proposal.

    4. Data Analysis: Indicate the statistical procedures you anticipate to use for your data analyses.

    5. Application of the Research Results: Offer your thoughts on what the relevance of your research will be in terms of its contribution to the scientific literature, and its relevance to policy and/or practice (that is, what does it imply with regard to program development or delivery). In this regard, include some of the forums that you anticipate to present and share the results of your research (e.g. presentations, publications).

    6. Project Timeline: Provide in sufficient detail the timetable for completion of the various activities to be carried out as part of your project.

    7. Briefly, point out the anticipated impacts that this research might have on professional development, and long-term collaboration with the research institute and collaborating researchers you plan to carry out your research.

    8. Proposed Budget: Specify the anticipated budget expenditures for your project and include a brief justification for these budget expenditures.
Notes: This Grant does not provide salary support..
  • Relevant Experience and Curriculum Vita: Briefly highlight the type of past activities that you may have been engaged in that is relevant to the proposed research project. This could include a listing of relevant publications, reports, and contributed papers. An abbreviated curriculum vita (no more that 5-6 pages) should be included with the project proposal packet.
  • Letter of reference from the major advisor (Ph.D. Students).
  • Letter of support from the SISERA member research institute at which you wish to work.

Who can Apply:

All Ph.D. candidates (ABD and/or very close in being ABD) and faculty members in U.S. universities in Economics, Agricultural Economics, and other closely related fields.

Women and other under represented minorities are highly encouraged to apply.

Proposal Packet

The proposal packet must include the following:

  • Applicant's Information form;
  • Description of the proposed research project following the guidelines;
  • Letter of Reference from the major advisor (for PhD. students only);
  • Letter of Support from the SISERA member research institute; and
  • Curriculum Vita

Submit original plus two hard copies, and a Word-file disk.

Level of Funding

The Grant would cover costs of travel, research-related expenses (e.g. data collection) and a stipend to cover daily lodging and food. Grants should normally be in range of $5,000 to $20,000.

Deliverables: What are the deliverables?

The following is expected from each Research Grantee:

  1. To present a seminar at the host institution with the collaborator(s).

  2. To leave a copy of all data and research related materials with the host and institute.

  3. To provide the SAGA grants office and the host institute with a trip report; detailing activities and events during the field research period; within three weeks of your return to the US.

  4. The following is expected within a year of field work:
    • Copy of final data (i.e. analyzed);
    • 5-6 page summary of the research findings and relevance to policies and/or SAGA's four thematic areas;
    • Publication in the SISERA-Seminar Papers with the collaborators; and
    • Report on their publications/and or international journals

Note: In all publications/presentations:

  • The original field research collaborators must be included not just acknowledged and,

  • In all outputs/publications/presentation the contributions of the host research institution and SAGA must be acknowledged.

Project Duration

All awardees will have 2-4 months to complete the proposed field research, and expected to begin between June 1, 2004 and October 1, 2004.
